The USS Impulse NCC 73929A, was launched in 2384 and was the first Impulse class carrier vessels in Starfleet.
The USS Impulse A was put into service to deal with the Tholian War. Notable action includes the Assault on Nassiri, Battle of Antilles Rift,
Siege of Corridor, Operation Faraday.
The Impulse Class is a starship dedicated to the use of small, maneuverable craft. This is an
obvious development from the USS Impulse NCC 73929, which used
Phaser/Torpedo Combination devices, which had been torpedos with AI to fire phaserson its suicide run.
The Phaser/Torpedo Combination were unreliable at times, and abandonedduring the early stages of the Tholian War.
The Impulse class was brought about though Thomas Andrews paper, documenting efficiency
of larger craft, citing the success smaller craft had at Trell IV, and likened the situation to the demise
of the Battleships in the 20th century and Cruiser/Destroyers in the 21st century, which are the sole type
of vessels in the present Federation Fleet.
This class of ship have near-to-none scientific mission functionality. Systems and space are devoted
to the Carrier function of the starship. The Impulse's
function is to be a moving platform for about 420 smaller craft.
The smaller craft range in function. It was deigned with Peregrine
Class Fighters in mind, but after those were stolen by the New Maquis, they were replace with 200
highly maneuverable 300 Aeon class Fighters and 100 less maneuverable but more powerful Talon Class Fighters.
There are 20 Shuttlecraft on-board, including the Hazard Team's Runabout.
The Impulse's was designed as a purely combat vessel.
The bays that hold and service these small craft take up over half of the vessel. These systems and, not to
mention, the materials and supplies, take up a lot of space. There are of course the engines, life support,
and other systems needed to run a starship in addition to the Fighter Complement, but the resource hungry
Science Department is scaled back.
